At least 15 dogs killed in devastating Pretoria smallholding fires

At least 15 dogs died and two homes were destroyed in Andeon fires, prompting an urgent appeal to help three affected families.

At least 15 dogs were killed and two homes destroyed in fires on smallholdings in Andeon, west of Pretoria, on Monday, October 19, according to the Emergency Support Team (EST).

Three affected families urgently need donations of food, clothing, shoes and other essentials.

Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Nana Kgiba said the department received a call reporting a grass fire at 12:42.

On arrival, firefighters from Soshanguve Fire Station found that the flames had spread to a house and outbuildings.

“The Emergency Command Centre also dispatched backup fire engines and water tankers from Rosslyn, Hazelwood, Hatfield and Wonderboom fire stations,” said Kgiba.

She said the cause of the fire could not be determined because of the extent of the damage.

While EST reported that at least 15 dogs had died, Kgiba said Emergency Services had no reports of dogs in its records.

EST members visited the affected area that evening to meet the families and identify their most urgent needs.

The team identified three families needing assistance and appealed to residents to support them as they begin rebuilding their lives.

“Any type of food donation will also be appreciated at this time,” EST said.

Clothing and shoes in the following sizes are needed:

Family 1:

  • Daughter: Clothing size 12–13 years and shoe size 4.
  • Son: Clothing size 12–13 years and shoe size 5.
  • Mother: Clothing size XXL and shoe size 6.
  • Father: Clothing size XXXL and shoe size 12.
