Selekane paints way to future

Solo exhibition for Mabopane-based artist, Michael Selekane, at the MB Studio Coimmunity.

MB Studio Community in Pretoria Central opened its doors to Mpumalanga-born Michael Tshepo Selekane’s first solo exhibition on Saturday.

The exhibition called Migration was part of Selekane’s most recent work which was influenced by his life and that of many others who have had to leave their home for greener pastures elsewhere.

“Growing up was not an easy experience (for me) as my family kept moving from one place to the other,” said Selekane.

“People move from one place to another in pursuit of a place they could call a home. That is what inspired this exhibition.”

Selekane exhibited at the Barat Centre this year, but has also exhibited at the Albany Museum in the past.

Some of the people who appreciate Selekane’s work could not stop tweeting about it:

Tuelo Rampoo, an art lover who resides in the city centre said: “I have never attended an exhibition such as this one. Selekane was able to capture what was happening in the world today.”

“We move in search of something to fill the void and Migration tells those stories that echo in people’s hearts. There is some sense of longing, for a place called home,” said the enthusiast art lover.

MB Studio Community is owned by Sarah McGee and Mbongeni Buthelezi and was founded in 2014.

The studio has an artist’s studio, art galleries and hosts regular arts evenings, educational workshops and an artist festival.

“MB Studio Community is about promoting the arts and artists, and we are happy about Selekane’s amazing work and the partnership we have created with him,” McGee said.
