NEWSFLASH: Police nab 15 after shootout

Police arrested 15 men following a shooting in Rubenstein Avenue early on Monday morning.

Fifteen men were arrested in a blitz in Garsfontein on Monday morning, police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Miller has confirmed.

Miller said this was after a shootout between a security guard and thieves in Rubenstein Avenue east of Pretoria.

The 15 were arrested in possession of stolen goods and a firearm.

“Although most facts are still to be confirmed, police have strong reasons to believe the 15 are linked to the shootout, in which a security officer was attacked by three unknown men,” Miller said.

He said investigations were ongoing but a charge of attempted murder had been opened at the station by the security firm.

Brinant Security firm operations manager Carl Coston said one of Brinant’s vehicles was shot at when a reaction officer responded to a burglary alarm.

He had been tipped off to a crime in the area.

As the reaction officer drove in Rubenstein Avenue around 03:30, he noticed two men carrying what he suspected was stolen property.

Then a third man jumped over a wall, also carrying suspected stolen property. This man immediately opened fire.

Coston said his officer suffered minor injury when shattered glass went into his eye.

“The officer returned fire,” he said.

“The men fled on foot.”

Police later raided the Garsfontein area and arrested 15 men with stolen property.

Police have confirmed arrested were in custody and would appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court within 48-hours.
