Man attacked for money

A man in his 40s was beaten and mugged by three criminals on Friday afternoon, who also robbed him of money and cellphone.

A man believed to be in his 40s was rushed to Kalafong hospital by ER24 after he was assaulted and robbed in Rooihuiskraal on Friday afternoon.

OrangeFox security who responded to the call said the man was walking through a veld in the Reeds when he was assaulted and robbed of R1 500 by three criminals.

“The guys beat the man up with a wooden plank. He sustained bumps and bruises on his chest as well as a broken arm,” said OrangeFox spokesperson Ruan Heyns.

According to ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing, the man was able to escape.

“It is understood that the man was assaulted while walking through a veld in Rooihuiskraal. He managed to escape and was found in a street close by,” Bodasing said.

She added that Community Policing Forum (CPF) members requested assistance. Orange Fox Security and ER24 paramedics assisted the man.

Upon assessment it was found that he sustained moderate injuries. He was treated and transported to the Kalafong hospital,” Bodasing said.

According to Wierdabrug sector 2 spokesperson, Pierre Viviers, the man was on his way to the bank to deposit money, which he had received for a job he had done for a client.

“The man was walking to the bank to deposit the money. He was then attacked when he decided to take a shortcut through a veld to the bank,” Viviers explained.

Viviers said the criminals escaped with the man’s cellphone and wallet which contained R1 500.

Viviers urged residents to be vigilant.

“People must be vigilant and not take short cuts because criminals hide there. If you are carrying a lot of money, it is best to ask for a lift (if you do not own a car) than to walk around carrying money on you,” he said.

Wierdabrug police spokespersperson, captain Agnes Huma could not yet provide comment before going to print.
