Police mum after cops were held hostage

Residents open a case against two police officers who allegedly stole from them.

Police are still silent about what would happen to the two officers allegedly held hostage in Pretoria West on Thursday for taking bribes.

Police spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto couldn’t confirm the allegation.

On Thursday evening, two officers were allegedly held hostage by Somali residents after suspecting them of stealing.

Community Policing Forum Chairperson Thesigan Pillay said on Tuesday that no arrests had been made yet.

“A case was opened by the residents following the incident but no one was arrested. Police told us that investigations were ongoing.”

“This comes after residents’ complained about officers taking bribes. On Thursday, the community decided to take a stand.” Pillay said.

M.S Hashi, a resident and local business forum chairperson told Rekord last week, that the two officers searched the Somali-owned shops.

“They took R50 000 and two smart phones,” Hashi said. “An alarmed was raised and locals immediately locked the gate to prevent the men from leaving.”

Hashi said residents called the police because they did not believe the two hostages were officers after they failed to produced police badges or their employment ID cards.

But when the Pretoria West police arrived at the scene, they confirmed they were indeed police officers, Hashi said.
