Residents of Danville are still spending sleepless nights patrolling the streets in their fight against crime in the area without any help from the police.
Six weeks ago, about 20 residents decided to form a neighbourhood watch to protect themselves from criminals.
They told Rekord that they wanted to keep their families safe at night after crime had escalated in the area and the police seemed unable to help.
Pretoria West Community Policing Forum (CPF) Chairperson Thesigan Pillay said on Tuesday, the police had failed the residents.
“The failure of the police [to reduce crime] has forced the community to unite and fight back… to grab the police’s attention so they could help.”
“To date the police remain invisible and seem unconcerned about our safety and as such, our struggle continues,” he concluded.
According to residents, the patrols started after the number of house robberies increased significantly in the area earlier this year.
It’s now been six weeks, since patrols started, the residents are still going strong and the number of patrollers having doubled.
Police could not be reached for comment at the time of going to print.
