Family files complaint against ‘dirty police’
Family claim they were robbed off R36 000 by police who also asked for bribe money.
A family in Pretoria West has filed a complaint of robbery against two police officers who allegedly robbed them at gunpoint.
Daganesiyaad Suleiman and his wife Asha said they were victims of a robbery at their home last Thursday.
“We were in the house around 19:00 when two men came and announced themselves as police officer. One of them said he was looking for illegal immigrants but failed to produce police badges.”
“One of them went into the rooms and when my wife tried to stop him, he unleashed a gun and tossed her aside,” he said.
Suleiman said the officer went as far as searching the Bangladeshi and Somali nationals who were sleeping at the house.
“We accommodated them for the night because they had to renew their paperwork the next day,” Suleiman said.
“The visitors were searched by the officer before their documents, money and cellphones were taken. He then proceeded to my bedroom where he stole R36 000 and a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. His accomplice took the three Bangladeshi nationals and locked them inside a police van. He told us that we needed to pop out R2 000 for their release.”
Suleiman said that residents decided to act swiftly while the two men were still inside the yard.
“We managed to lock the gates and called the Pretoria West police. When they got to the scene, they revealed that the two men were police officers.”
“Nothing was done to them but the Bangladeshi nationals were released by the station commander,” he added.
Suleiman said he and his wife laid a complaint of theft.
Pretoria West police spokesperson Captain Reed Steynburg said a different case was opened on Saturday involving two officers and Somali nationals.
“Two of our officers arrested four Somali national for usage of drugs and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. We are still investigating to see if there is any link to the case we are dealing with and the one opened by Suleiman.”
