Claims of bribery against police investigated

Pretoria West police respond to claims by Somali nationals that the police were shaking them down for bribes.

Pretoria West police are still investigating at spate of allegations of police targeting Somali nationals for robbery and bribery.

Daganesiyaad Suleiman told Rekord that he and his wife Asha were robbed by two officers last week Thursday, at their home in Luttig street, Pretoria West.

Police spokesperson Captain Reed Steynberg confirmed that Suleiman filed a robbery complaint against the two officers.

“A case of robbery was opened at the Pretoria West police station. The couple alleged that the two officers came to their home and pulled out a firearm before taking their money.”

Steynberg said the officers accused were not from Pretoria West.

“We are investigating the case closely and other related incidents that happened around the same area,” she said.

Another case was opened on Saturday, involving two officers and Somali nationals, Steynberg said.

“Two of our officers arrested four Somali nationals for usage of drugs and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The four appeared in court this week, and are currently out on bail,” she said.

M.S Hashi, a resident and local business forum chairperson told Rekord that police threatened them with arrest if they don’t pay payola.

“The residents here have been victimised for too long, we just want a good relationship with the police.”
