Business owners continue selling alcohol to minors

Tavern owners continue with their illegal sale of alcohol to minors.

Several business owners in Soshanguve ignore the law prohibiting the sale of alcohol to people under the age of 18.

They simply say their main objective is to make profit.

Business owner Thabitha Mofokeng said she could not apply the law when it came to minors because she was in business to make money.

Some of her minor customers were the children of a neighbour or close friends.

“I cannot always turn them away,” she said.

“Besides, it is a parent’s job to ensure that the child is not involved in illegal activities.”

Parent Hluphegile Maswanganye had a different view.

“Business owners do not seem to care that alcohol and drug abuse ruins the future of our children,” she said.

“Our children are the future of this country. It is the duty of the business owners to ensure that all their customers are old enough to purchase alcohol and tobacco goods.”

Amogelang Maswanganye said she was introduced to alcohol by friends and cousins and had been illegally buying alcohol from local taverns since the age of 14.

She said she had never been asked to produce any form of identification.

Constable Mnguni, of the Soshanguve police station said: “The police are not responsible for making arrests based on any drinking complaints. It is the job of the Liquor Board that deploys employees who work together with the police.”

He said Liquor Board employees did have teams raiding taverns.

“Perpetrators are not dealt with by the police. The Liquor board deals with these types of cases,” concluded Mnguni.
