Five injured in crash
A taxi crashed into a truck on Tuesday and almost tipped it over.
Five people were injured when a minibus taxi and a truck owned by MD courier services collided in Stanza Bopape Street, east of Pretoria, on Tuesday morning.
The taxi got lodged under the truck.
Brandon Schoeman, operations manager at MDS courier services, said from what he could tell when he arrived at the scene the taxi was driving at high speed.
“The driver of the taxi said the truck driver did not see him and he [the taxi driver] did not have the time to brake,” said Schoeman.
Schoeman said the truck was en route from the airport to the depot when the accident happened. The three occupants in the truck had to be freed by emergency services and were taken to hospital.
He said there was heavy traffic in the Hatfield area of Stanza Bopape Street at around 07:00. The truck was crossing from Richard Street and two motorists ahead of the taxi stopped to allow the truck to cross.
According to Schoeman, the taxi, which was in the lane to turn right, drove straight on and into the truck at high speed.
“The taxi crashed into the truck and almost tipped it over,” said Schoeman.
He said the taxi driver and his passenger were also injured.
“The taxi driver refused to be taken to hospital,” said Schoeman.
