Police and Moot residents take action against crime

Moot residents helped police clean up the mountainside used as shelter for criminals.

Riviera and Rietondale residents took part in a crime prevention initiative the past week.

Under the leadership of Warrant Officer Lodewyk Jonker and Sergeant Rina Moseki, of Moot police, members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and residents formed two teams to sweep the mountainside of Meintjieskop between Riviera and Tom Jenkins Drive.

The objective of the sweep was to identify illegal dwellings on the mountainside. The sweep teams were asked to keep an eye out for suspected stolen items and suspects hiding out in the field.

“Homeowners have reported numerous thefts from houses bordering the mountainside,” explained a resident.

“Laptops, iPads, cellphones and other valuables were stolen and in some cases the bold thieves even broke into homes while the owners were there.”

The resident says the joint operation involved members of Homeowners Associations Rhoara (Rietondale) and Rhibo (Riviera) to “send a clear message that criminals are being watched and will be brought to justice”.

Being alert and aware of one’s surroundings and knowing who you can call when reporting a crime or emergency is important for every resident.

“It is imperative to limit criminal acts by cooperating with the police in the ongoing battle against crimes in our suburbs.”
