Hostel residents are fed-up
Mamelodi Hostel dwellers say the police are not helping them against the drug addicts.
Mamelodi hostel residents are fed up with the nyaope drug addicts who have turned the Place of Song into hell.
A resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, for fear of his safety, said, “Residents complained to the police about two years ago, but the police and local community police forum are unhelpful.”
Since the addicts infested the hostel there has been a lot of crime, prostitution, robberies and lots of burglaries, especially at the Kingsley hostel in Block D and the Mamelodi hostel in Block Y next to Sun Valley.
Another resident, who only identified himself as Samuel, said the addicts used drugs in the hostel and even drug lords sold drugs there.
“Residents complained to the police but nothing happened, all they promised was that they would bring in the police K9 unit to search the hostel,” said Samuel.
“Another big problem at the hostel is that children of school going age came here to take drugs; a majority of them no longer go to school,” he said.
He said police patrolled the area, but they collected bribes from the drug lords rather than prevented crime.
“That is why the drug problem is not being solved,” he said.
“As residents we tried to do something. We patrolled the hostels and chased the addicts away but the police intervened,” he said.
The residents told Rekord the police assaulted a hostel dweller who took a photo of them accepting a bribe from the drug lords.
No comment was received from Mamelodi West police and the Community Policing Forum at the time of going to press.
