Special voter registration opens 10 June

Residents who qualify to cast special votes for this year’s local elections can register from 10 June to 8 July.

Residents who qualify, can apply to cast a special vote in the municipal elections from 10 June.

The application for permission to cast a special vote will close on 8 July.

Voters qualify to cast a special vote if:

– They are sick or infirm

– They will not be in the metro on election day

The local elections will take place on 3 August and observers believe it will be one of the most important ballots since the country’s first democratic election in 1994.

The government has declared 3 August a public holiday and voting stations will be open from 07:00 to 21:00 on the day.

Special voting will however, take place on 1 and 2 August, either at the voting station where the resident is registered to vote or at the voter’s home for those who are physically unable to go to a polling station.

Voters can register to cast a special vote at any Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) office.
