Final results expected on Friday
By Friday evening, all the results of the 2016 local elections should be available
The final results of the large metropolitan councils such as Tshwane will be released on Friday, deputy chief electoral officer of the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) Sy Mamabolo announced.
However, the final tally for the Nelson Mandela Bay metro in Port Elizabeth was expected on Thursday night.
Mamabolo said the counting of the votes in the metros took long because of the population density of the areas.
Briefing the media late on Thursday afternoon, he said 90% of the votes in the 2016 local government elections should be counted late on Thursday evening.
Mamabolo said at this stage, 19 objections about instances at polling stations had been received from either candidates or political parties.
“We are in the process of considering these objections” he said.
Meanwhile, Mamabolo admitted that certain candidates and representatives of political parties could not enter the ballot counting offices in the Tshwane metro. He however stressed that there was no sinister reason behind this.
“The problem we have is space,” he said.
“The matter is however receiving our immediate attention.”
