Hoorah for DA! – Tweets

Congratulatory Tweets and Facebook posts streamed in as DA was announced as the official biggest party in Tshwane.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) social media pages were flooded with support on Saturday afternoon as the final Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) results indicated that the DA won the local government election race in the Tshwane metro by securing 43.10% of the votes, followed closely by the African National Congress at 41,48%.

Counting of votes in the all-important Tshwane metro was completed shortly before 13:00 on Saturday.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) ended its challenge on 11,64% – a total of 206 874 ballots cast in its favour.

With neither the DA nor the ANC achieving 50% or more of the votes, both parties will have to scramble to form a coalitions with EFF cooperation being the top prize.

No time can be wasted for coalition talks to start. There is only a two-week window in which a clear leader for the council must emerge to avoid another election.

In Johannesburg votes are still being counted with the ANC currently holding the lead.

Meanwhile, the ANC also took to their social media and noted that although they did extremely well overall, there is definitely room for improvement.
