Solly is Tshwane’s new mayor
More than 200 councillors were sworn in as members of the Tshwane metro.
DA member Solly Msimanga was elected mayor of the Tshwane metro on Friday afternoon to cheers, applause and singing.
Msimanga was the only councillor nominated for the position in the newly- elected city council.
His appointment was supported by the EFF.
Msimanga replaces outgoing ANC mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa to become the first DA mayor in the capital.
His appointment was confirmed by the newly-elected Speaker, Rachel Mathebe, who also appointed the DA’s Christiaan van den Heever as Chief Whip.
More than 200 councillors were sworn in as members of the Tshwane metro at a special council meeting that took place without disruptions.
The DA failed to achieve an outright majority in the recent local government elections, but a pledge of support from the EFF enabled it to take over the metro from the ANC.
