Doctor caught with foetuses

Police also seized medication believed to have been stolen from government hospitals.

A deregistered doctor operating in central Pretoria has been arrested when police found about 24 bags of suspected foetuses in a freezer.

Police spokesperson Captain Thomas Mufumadi said police also seized medication believed to have been stolen from government hospitals.

“The doctor was arrested at a surgery in Francis Baard Street on Tuesday,” he said.

“She had a large quantity of scheduled medication that is suspected to be from state hospitals as well as bags of what we suspect to be aborted foetuses.”

It was not immediately clear what led to the find and subsequent arrest of the doctor.

Criminal charges were laid against the 50-year-old doctor and she was expected to appear in court soon.

Health Professions Council of SA (HCPSA) spokesperson Priscilla Sekhonyana said the doctor was deregistered in 2008 for failure to pay annual fees.

“Practitioners who do not pay are infringing the law. This is seen as a serious offence.”

Gauteng health spokesperson Steve Mabona said the department would investigate the allegations.

“We discourage people from going to illegal abortion centres. Always check if the doctor is registered with the HPCSA,” said Mabona.

He said if a doctor was practising without being registered with the HPCSA, the doctor could face a fine or imprisonment of up to 15 years.
