Overgrown grass cut in the west

"They have assured me that there will be a notable difference in the coming months."

Grass in the west of Pretoria has finally started being cut, to the relief of residents.

According to DA ward councillor, Elma Nel, municipal workers started to cut the grass on Wednesday morning.

“I am very thankful for the work put in for the grass to be cut.”

“The whole process was slowed due to the recent rain we had. Although we were very grateful for the rain, it caused a lot of mud.”

“Some of our municipal cleaning vehicles even got stuck in the mud.”

She added that not only ward 1’s grass will be cut, but the rest of the west of Pretoria as well.

Rekord reported last week that tall grass in Danville drove its residents up the wall.

Resident, Lydia Kirsten, told Rekord that not only has the overgrown grass become a hiding spot for criminals, it also impacts visibility.

Kristen lives in Dan Road, where overgrown grass became a thorn in residents’ side.

“I have seen motorists drive to the middle of the road when turning into a street to get a better view of oncoming traffic because the grass is simply too tall,” Kirsten said last week.

She added that most grass areas in the west of Pretoria are overgrown.

“This is becoming dangerous. The criminals hide in plain sight in the grass,” she said.

According to Kirsten the grass was last cut at the beginning of the year.

Kirsten said she had laid a complaint at the Tshwane metro earlier this month.

“We cannot even go for a walk because the pavements are cracked and cement blocks obstruct the paths as a result of the overgrown grass,” she told the metro in an email.

“We used to love to walk around in the park, but we cannot go there anymore. The grass is too tall. It’s no longer a safe place for kids to play.”

Kirsten said the metro sent through a request for grass to be cut.

Ward 3 councillor, Carlo de Bruyn said on Monday: “Deputy Municipal Electoral Officer, Kgomotso Mohlala, recently arranged a tour of my ward where I took them to all my problem areas including illegal dumping, overgrown parks and open areas.”

“They have assured me there will be a notable difference in the coming months. They are, in unison working with various departments in order to catch up with the backlog as well as to improve service delivery in general.”

“As the councillor I am doing everything I can to assure this happens. Feel free to contact me with your service delivery issues.”
