West residents work to keep the community safe
“We would like to foster a relationship between the police and the community.”
After moving into their new facility, the Hercules Sector 2 CPF is now more accessible to the public.
“We needed an office in a better location to be more visible to residents,” said Tilla van Deventer, the chairperson of the CPF.
The group moved into its new headquarters in May.
She said the group was formed to hold the police accountable.
“We would like to foster a relationship between the police and the community,” she said.
Van Deventer said that Sector 2 would like the police to ensure safety and improve the quality of the life of the residents.

“With the new facility, Sector 2 will now be able to perform their tasks more effectively,” she said.
“These tasks include, but are not limited to, doing patrols, assisting in accidents, distributing safety information and providing medical assistance.”
The spokesperson for Sector 2, Jan Prinsloo, said it was vital for residents to make friends with their neighbours.
“Residents need to know what’s going on.”
Prinsloo advised residents should keep all serial numbers for all their belongs.
“Today, our homes must, unfortunately, look like jails on the outside, but it’s for you and your family’s own safety,” he said.
“Make sure your burglar bars, safety gates and alarm systems are in good working order.”

Prinsloo said residents should always be watchful and careful and always trust their instinct.
“If something feels wrong, something is probably wrong. Be aware of your surroundings, walk close to the curb, facing oncoming traffic, carry bags close to your body and look confident,” he said.
“Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. If you are being followed, head for a crowded place.”
He said if people start milling around you, it could be a set-up for a mugging.
“Know yourself, how do you react in a crisis situation? Do you scream, cry and freeze? How would you defend yourself?”
