New water reticulation network for the East

The project which is an eight month long project is expected to be completed by August 2018 and during the construction residents will be duly notified of any water supply interruptions.

Work to replace asbestos water supply pipes in the Moreleta Park, Pretoria east area, is underway.

The R12.9 million upgrade is part of an overarching city-wide project to replace old and dilapidated water networks.

The area has been plagued by leaks and water supply interruptions over the years causing frustration for residents especially in Elarduspark, Rietvalleipark and Waterkloof AH.

MMC for utility services Daryl Moss said there were many pipes that needed to be replaced because they were past their design lifetime, and there was R2 billion hole in the budget for the work.

Moss said a much faster replacement turnaround and a system design that was up to standard were crucial for the metro to live up to service delivery expectations.

“Our programme of replacing the worn-out water networks with new pipes will minimise interruptions and ensure that asbestos cement pipes, which are a health risk, are gradually substituted,” said Moss adding this depended on the availability of funds.

Moss said: “The project will be closely monitored to ensure that it is completed on time and there will be awareness campaigns to help curb water wastages among residents.”

DA ward councillor Reyaan Uys said this was a big step towards improving service delivery and dealing with frustrations caused by frequent leaks and supply interruptions.
