Ga-Rankuwa police begin year on a high note

The Ga-Rankuwa police have begun the year on a high note, nabbing 24 suspects in their first anti-crime operation of the new year.

Spokesperson Captain Matthews Nkoadi said the police were looking to step up crime prevention initiatives and build on the successes of the festive period when they arrested a lot of people.

He said the operation included roadblocks, stop and searches and police visibility in the Ga-Rankuwa area.

“The arrests were for assault, pointing of a firearm, malicious damage to property, theft, dealing in dagga, possession of dagga, drunken driving and being in the country illegally among others,” he said.

“The illegal immigrants will be deported with the help of Home Affairs.

“Roadblocks were held, and stop and search [operations] on different hot-spots were conducted. Suspects were arrested for various offences such as, housebreaking and theft, armed robbery, business robbery, driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of suspected stolen property, malicious damage to property, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of dagga, traffic offences and selling liquor without valid licences.”

During the blitz, police also gave residents safety tips on car-hijacking, crime scene management, and theft from motor vehicles.

All suspects arrested are expected to appear in court soon.

“We urge our communities to contact our crime stop number 08600-10111 to report any crime at all times.”
