North sewers deliberately sabotaged, says DA

“Technicians retrieved bricks, large rocks and even buckets from the sewers.”

Despite threats and acts of sabotage, the Tshwane metro remained committed to improving the sewer system in Ga-Rankuwa, the metro said.

Ga-Rankuwa residents, protesting blocked drains spilling sewage into the streets, took to the streets on Wednesday and shut down Phedisong Clinic at Zone 6.

Some sewers were, however, blocked deliberately according to Tshwane utility services MMC Darryl Moss.

“Technicians have retrieved bricks, large rocks and even buckets from the sewers,” he said on Thursday.

“None this could have entered the system accidentally. They were clearly inserted in an attempt to sabotage service delivery.”

City officials trying to replace broken sewer lines were also held up by people claiming to represent community groupings and business forums.

“They threatened to stop projects unless they are included in those projects,” said Moss.

The metro assured Ga-Rankuwa residents that the sewer replacement project will continue as planned.

“Any acts of sabotage will be subjected to the full might of the law,” said Moss. “Those groupings should raise their concerns through the proper channels.”

The R5-million project to replace sewer pipes kicked off towards the end of last year.

There are also plans to make additional funding available to continue with the sewer replacement project once this first phase has been completed.
