UPDATE: Repair work to finally start on Centurion sinkhole

It will cost R25 million to fix the sinkhole.

Repairs have finally begun on the huge sinkhole on the Gerhardt Street and Jean Avenue intersection in Lyttelton – eight months after the hole first made its appearance.

“We are happy repairs on the sinkhole were underway,” said MMC for roads and transport Sheila-Lynn Senkubuge announced on Monday.

The DA administration committed R25 million to the repairs, she said.

“This is the largest single cost of repair and the tender has been awarded to a contractor with necessary capacity to undertake the work.”

There are currently 24 sinkholes in Tshwane, 23 of which are in the Centurion, Laudium and Olivenhoutbosch.

Senkubuge said the former administration had not adequately budgeted for the repairs.

“We are working to correct that, starting with the most urgent sinkhole repair on Jean Avenue.”

In an earlier report, Senkubuge said it would cost R60 million to fix all the sinkholes.

“The metro has committed to address the problem over the next few financial years.”

She said the metro had prioritised the repair of two other sinkholes in Clubview for approximately R3 million and in 2nd Avenue in Claudius for approximately R15 million.

“In the coming weeks the metro will see how further funds can be used to repair these sinkholes within this financial year.”
