Cops’ quick action stops east car thief in his tracks

Suspect lost control of the vehicle, and veered alongside the road and hit the rocks.

Within 20 minutes of a vehicle being stolen in Villieria, police managed to trace it and arrest a man on Friday.

The 24-year-old man was arrested near the Denneboom taxi rank in Mamelodi for theft of a motor vehicle.

Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said the man allegedly drove off in the vehicle while the owner was opening the gate. The vehicle had been left idling at the time.

“The victim then quickly reported the car stolen to the Villeria police station,” said Maheso.

“The Tshwane flying squad spotted the vehicle driving towards Mamelodi less than 20 minutes after it was reported stolen.

“A chase ensued,” said Maheso.

The suspect lost control of the car, and veered to the side of the road and hit some rocks.

The suspect was arrested and will soon appear in court.
