A late night drive home turned into a life-and-death situation for Delmas resident Adriaan Swart recently when a fellow motorist shot at him.
The incident happened on Friday, 12 January on Lynnwood Road before the Bapsfontein turn-off around midnight.
The usually busy road was quiet when a driver of a white Ford Focus behind Swart flashed its headlights at him, who was with his wife Magriet.
“I reduced my speed and noticed the driver had his hand outside the vehicle,” Swart told Rekord.
“Then I heard a loud noise and I thought he had thrown a stone at my car.
When I, however, realised it was a gunshot, I knew it was serious. But in that moment, I wasn’t thinking about myself, I was concerned for my wife’s safety.
I just drove on because I knew that there would be trouble if I stopped.

I kept my eye on the car in the rear-view mirror the whole time.”
Swart said the Ford pulled off the road and he drove home.
Swart said his right-hand headlamp was broken and a bullet was found lodged in the engine.
He said he suspected the attack was an attempted robbery and knew better than to stop.
“We’re not living in a peaceful world anymore,” he said.
“We shouldn’t go looking for trouble and make things worse.
We should just realise when we’re on the road and have someone with us, that that person’s life is worth more than trying to be macho.”

Swart said he wanted to tell his story to warn other motorists.
“People must be careful when driving on that road (Lynnwood Road) at night.
Women should never drive alone, not even in the daytime.
If you get a flat tyre, your chances of getting robbed are quite good,” said Swart.
“It is simply not safe anymore.”
He said he reported the incident to the Boschkop police station.
