The Tshwane metro police have set out to get a group of people who vandalised sewer project in Ga-Rankuwa on Monday.
The group, claiming to be from the SA national civics organisation (Sanco), stormed the sewerage network upgrade operations site demanding to know the names of contractors.
“They threatened to close the site, confiscate the contractors’ equipment and hold the workers hostage if the city officials did not come to meet them,” said Tshwane MMC for utility services Darryl Moss.
Moss strongly condemned the disruption and said the metro had requested the acting chief of metro police to secure the site and arrest those trying to disrupt the project.
“We have a duty to deliver much-needed services to the people of Tshwane. The sewer replacement project will continue as planned and any acts of sabotage will be subjected to the full might of the law because it is ultimately the people of Ga-Rankuwa who suffer sewerage leakages,” said Moss.

Moss said the R5 million Ga-Rankuwa sewer project replacement project that started last year had already been delayed by such sabotage.
“There are also plans to make additional funding available to continue with the project, once this first phase has been completed,” he said.
“The DA administration is committed to the safe, fair and equitable provision of services to all residents and asks that they work with us to ensure the provision of rudimentary services.”
Sanco officials were not reachable for comment at the time of going to print.
