UPDATE: Police await DNA results in missing Mooinooi couple case

Mooinooi accused due back in court on Thursday.

Police are still awaiting DNA test results in the missing Mooinooi couple case.

Married couple Joey (32) and Anisha (30) van Niekerk went missing in December while on their way to a funeral in Pretoria.

Their burnt-out vehicle was found on 16 December in Magaliesburg. On 28 December what was believed to be their remains were discovered in a bush in Buffelsfontein, near Mooinooi.

“The DNA testing results haven’t come back, we’re still waiting,” police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mpeile Talane said.

Since the couple’s disappearance, six men and two women have been arrested in connection with the case.

Koos Strydom (53), Aaron Sithole (23), Alex Mudau (36), Moses Rakubu (33), Vincent Strydom (29), Maruschka Opperman (18), Mercia Witney van Rooi (21) and Jack Mokotedi are facing charges of murder, rape, kidnapping, robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm and defeating the ends of justice.

Van Rooi was believed to be engaged to one of the accused, Koos Strydom.

Anisha’s brother, Wynand van Niekerk recently posted a letter on his Facebook page describing what he called “a very difficult time”.

“I hope that they will not get bail. We are also waiting for the DNS results. Please continue to pray and hope with us so that the truth will come out.”

The arrested are due back in court on 25 January.
