Pretoria has been plagued by a spate of cash-in-transit heists, according to anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee.
“In fact, there have been two cash-in-transit heist incidents in less than a 24-hour period this week alone,” Abramjee told Rekord on Tuesday.
“We have definitely been seeing an increase in cash-in-transit heists over the past few months,” he said. “There is reason for concern.”
In the latest incident, a security guard was injured on Monday afternoon when a gang tried to rob a cash truck in Soshanguve.
The attackers fled the scene after their car crashed into a security vehicle driving behind the cash-in-transit truck. The 26-year-old guard was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
An earlier attack took place on the N14 before Eufees Road on Sunday when an unconfirmed number of armed robbers blew up a cash-in-transit vehicle before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.

“Every day we hear about vans being bombed and it’s about time the police did something,” said Abramjee.
“These gangs are heavily armed and very resourceful. Security guards are usually outnumbered and outgunned – they have no choice but to surrender.”
Abramjee said both security companies and the police needed a clever solution to stop these robberies.
