Police operations in Sunnyside led to 135 people being found guilty for drug-related offences over the festive season.
Most notably, one culprit – a certain Jabu Mabuza – was found guilty of drug-related offences on two separate occasions during the month of December, according to police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela.
The 28-year-old Mabuza got away with a suspended sentence and a R2 000 fine when he was initially convicted of possession of drugs.
“He was not so lucky the second time around when he was handed a six-months direct imprisonment sentence for a similar offence,” Mavimbela said.
Sunnyside has been ranked as the area with the highest rate of “opportunistic” crimes such as theft out of a motor vehicle or smash-and-grabs.

The prevalence of these crimes was believed to be directly proportional to drug abuse.
“Motorists can also help by making sure their valuables are not left lying negligently on car seats or anywhere inside their vehicles,” said Mavimbela.
Police were set to intensify their network of anti-drug sting operations, surveillance and intelligence around the area.
