“Concentrate on your school work and stay away from taverns,” Mamelodi learners were told this week.
These words of wisdom came during a visit to Vlakfontein secondary school last Wednesday by several organisations including Mamelodi West police, Tshwane child welfare and the local community policing forum (CPF).
It is part of the government communication information system’s Back to School campaign.
The police’s involvement was to build a good relationship between schools and the local police station, said police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso.
He said it also helped them forge a closer working relationship with teachers in the fight against drugs at schools.

Maheso said they spoke about social issues that affected learning such as social media, blessers, bullying and alcohol abuse.
Social worker Anastacia Mosehla urged learners to take their education seriously because it was the key to their success.
“Never keep a secret if you are going through a tough time… talk to any person you trust for help, be it your teacher, a friend, neighbour, police officer, CPF member or social worker,” she told learners.
“We are here to protect you.”

Grade 10 learner Thoriso Malete (16) told Rekord: “I am very happy the police came to our school. Now I know of all the help that I can get from them.”
The organisations also visited Vukani Mawethu, Mamelodi high and J Kekana high schools.
Maheso said they would visit more schools until the end of February.
