The upkeep of a neglected postal box pickup point in Valhalla isn’t really the responsibility of the Tshwane metro, a Centurion ward councillor has said.
“The post boxes belong to the SA post office, thus making the maintenance their responsibility,” ward councillor Ina Strijdom told Rekord.

She was responding to a query after Rekord received an anonymous letter from a resident with photos of the neglected postal boxes.
Strijdom said the metro may not use municipal money or resources for the maintenance of “non-municipal facilities”.
“However,” she added. “I do ask the metro to cut the grass and pick up the litter from time to time.”

Strijdom said herself and some of the Clubview residents did a clean-up at the post boxes in 2016 to spruce up the area.
Many homeless people also seek shelter at the post boxes, she said.
“The people sleeping there have been removed by the TMPD a few times. Yet, they cannot be arrested as they did not break any laws. When they are removed, they just come back the next day.”
Strijdom said this is a problem all over the Tshwane metro, and not just isolated to Clubview.
An enquiry was sent to the SA post office, which is yet to comment.
