More than 300 Mamelodi East families had to allegedly make do with only five mobile toilets when they were allocated permanent stands in Phomolong extension 6 recently.
The residents claim they were promised that infrastructure would be installed, but so far nothing has happened.
The mobile toilets were also located a distance from their homes, forcing them to use buckets.

Resident Johannes Kgapola said the mobile toilets were always full and unhealthy.
“People living with disabilities are also suffering because they can’t even walk to the mobile toilets or use them.
“We were told that we will receive all the services we need in the area. But none of that has been done by the city of Tshwane. Today we are left in the dark and forced to use five mobile toilets for the whole community,” he said.
“We cannot continue living in such conditions. It is not healthy for us and this is not what they promised residents.
“We don’t want to live like this. We all deserve better lives. We demand that Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga come and use one of the mobile toilets himself,” said Kgapola.

Area councillor Dorcus Maja said she had been promised by regional 6 director Sello Chipu that residents would get permanent toilets soon. She said that money donated by passenger rail authority of South Africa was available.
Maja said it was not safe for residents to go out at night as the high-mast lights were not working, allowing criminals to take advantage of the situation.
Between January and February, more than 35 women in Phomolong extension 6 had reportedly been robbed, raped or stabbed.
“Phomolong extension 6 desperately needs visible policing, but we are disappointed by the Mamelodi East police because the only time they come to Phomolong is when they raid the scrapyards.”
Tshwane metro had not yet commented by the time of going to print.
