Training EPWP workers to be money savvy

"The training will empower the participants to make prudent financial decisions with their hard-earned wages."

The government will intensify the financial training of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers this year.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) plans to train over 3 500 EPWP beneficiaries on how to use their wages to get themselves out of poverty.

The Pretoria workshops will be held in June.

The EPWP is a government programme aimed at reducing unemployment and poverty-alleviation by making available labour-intensive job opportunities in infrastructure, social, environmental, cultural and non-state sectors to the youth.

All spheres of government including state-owned entities are expected to implement the programme.

The government hopes that the programme gives youth the skills that stand them in good stead in the job market or starting a business.

Stanley Henderson, programme deputy director general, said the training would provide participants with vital information regarding their personal financial decisions.

“The training will empower participants to make prudent financial decisions with their hard-earned wages,” he said.

Henderson’s colleague Reuben Komane said the training would be offered at various centres around the country.

“The training will help participants to develop personal financial skills such as how to save and develop a budget. We believe that these skills are vital in assisting our participants to effectively manage their monthly wages,” he said.

Since the programme started in 2016, 12 500 EPWP beneficiaries have been trained.
