Two men were arrested thanks to a private security firm when they tried to scavenge parts from a block of abandoned houses in Garsfontein.
Bull Security spokesperson French Jooste said the firm received a tip-off about criminal activity at one of the houses on Thursday.
“Our reaction team responded and upon arrival, the suspects were still inside the house,” he said.

“Our reaction unit entered and caught the criminals in the act.”
He said the men were arrested by the Garsfontein police.
Jooste said it was alleged that the men could be connected to a recent string of house break-ins in the area.

“For the past three weeks we had numerous house break-ins in Garsfontein,” he said.
“The block of houses was targeted by criminals and these criminals stole copper pipes, taps, wall sockets and electric cables from the houses.”
The block of about six houses is reported to have been bought by a real estate agent and they were all empty.

The police could not respond for comment at the time of going to press.
