Bystanders freed a critically injured man who was trapped beneath an overturned vehicle on the N4 near Equestria.

A man was critically injured in a rollover accident on the N4 highway in the Equestria area of Pretoria East shortly after 11:00.

According to the Volunteer Emergency Medical Response Unit (VEMRU), emergency responders received a report that someone was trapped under an overturned vehicle.

VEMRU said bystanders had managed to turn the vehicle back onto its wheels, freeing the trapped man before emergency personnel arrived.

Paramedics assessed the man and found that he was in a critical condition, having sustained injuries to his head and limbs.

He was stabilised at the scene until a Gauteng Emergency Medical Services ambulance and a private advanced life support paramedic arrived.

The man was transported to a nearby hospital under advanced life support care.

The Gauteng Traffic Police took over the scene to investigate the circumstances of the accident.

Emer-G-Med, Gauteng Emergency Medical Services, the Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department, Gauteng Traffic Police and the South African Police Service assisted at the scene.
