A man has appeared in court in connection with the death of Centurion teenager Ruan Viljoen, nearly a year-and-a half after he was killed.
Siphiwe Mahlaba (29) appeared before magistrate Frans von Reiche to face charges of culpable homicide in the Pretoria magistrate’s court.
Mahlaba’s appearance comes after combined private and police investigations linked his vehicle to the hit-and-run incident that killed Viljoen.
Von Reiche postponed the case for disclosure of the contents of the docket to Mahlaba and his legal representation.
Viljoen’s parents Anita and Sergei Greyvenstein, supported by friends, attended the court proceedings.
After the death of their only son, the Greyvenstein family hired a private investigator in an effort to help the police find the vehicle that killed Viljoen.
The 18-year-old was killed on 19 March last year, two weeks before his 19th birthday. His body was found in the centre median on the N14 highway by ER24 paramedics.
