Officials from a private security company arrested one suspect in Moreleta Park on Friday evening after he was found in possession of materials used in smash-and-grab incidents.
The arrest was made at around 21:15 on the corner of Garstfontein Road and De Villebois Mareuil Drive.
There had been a spate of smash-and-grab incidents in the area, said Brinant Security Group spokesperson Martin Barnard.
“Our members were assisting with visibility in the area when the suspicious-looking suspect was spotted,” said Barnard.
The 32-year-old man was searched by the reactions officer and was found in possession of porcelain pieces.
“These pieces are thrown against car windows in order to break them during smash-and-grab incidents. Our members handed the man over to the Garsfontein police,” said Barnard.
Meanwhile, police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach confirmed that the 32-year-old was in custody at the Garsfontein police station.
“He will be appearing in court on Monday on charges of possession of motor vehicle theft tools,” said Weilbach.
Weilbach once again urged motorists to be careful when travelling with items in their vehicles.
“The perpetrators will break into vehicles for just about anything. The principal of ‘boot it or lose it, is all that helps as some motorists tend to think when they put things under their seats they are safe,” said Weilbach.
It is not only women who are being targeted.
“These incidents tend to occur late in the evening but also early in the morning hours, especially between 05:00 and 07:00.”
