LISTEN: Residential complex house break-ins on the rise – police

By leaving doors and windows unlocked or open you make it that much easier for criminals to gain access to your property.

An increase in the number of house break-ins in residential complexes in the area has prompted warnings from the Lyttelton police.

The most recent incident, according to Lyttelton police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller, happened on Wednesday morning.

Two suspects entered the residential complex home of a woman around 02:00 on the day.

“The robbers assaulted the woman and attempted to steal her car,” said Miller.

“Luckily the security at the complex were alert and prevented them from leaving the property with the car.”

The two men are still at large.

Miller called on residents to be vigilant, especially in residential complexes which often create a false sense of security.

“Ensure at all times that your doors are locked,” he said.

By leaving doors and windows unlocked or open you make it that much easier for criminals to gain access to your property, Miller said.

“If you become suspicious or hear anything out of the ordinary do not exit the property to investigate. Rather alert the security or authorities to ensure your safety.”

When confronted by robbers, Miller suggested remaining calm as far as possible and complying with instructions.

“Try to get as much details regarding the robbers as possible to provide to police afterwards. This will greatly assist in their investigation.”

Miller also urged residents to report any and all suspicious activity and criminal incidents.
