Where to buy, sell and swop used textbooks in Pta

Gone are the days when you had to buy a brand new textbook for each course module. Pre-loved textbooks are now available in just a few clicks.

Elex Academy Bookstore

The Elex Academy Bookstore is an online bookstore that sells textbooks across the country. Customers can later sell these textbooks back to the bookstore and receive a percentage of what they paid back.

Pimp My Book

Pimp My Book is an accredited merchant and member of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), Eduloan and the South African Booksellers Association (SABA).

Protea Bookshop

You can bring your old textbooks to any branch between 08:00 and 16:00 from Mondays to Fridays, and 08:00 to 13:00 on Saturdays. Staff will assess the value of the books and either offer you cash or store credit. Books that are part of a series of which that particular edition will fall into disuse the next semester will unfortunately not be of value.

Maggie’s Book Exchange

If you love the sight of stacked shelves and the smell of old books, Maggie’s Book exchange is for you. Maggie’s may not have the most recent editions of university textbooks, but it’s a great option if you’re looking for a novel to read in-between classes. Maggie’s also offers you a percentage of what you paid for a book if you return it in a good condition.

Call 071 401 1174 or visit their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pg/Maggies-Book-Exchange-122017107856443/about/?ref=page_internal

Social media

Facebook is also a great platform to buy or sell handbooks. There are hundreds of buy/sell groups that connect Pretorians with one another. You can also join student groups such as ‘UNISA Students™’, ‘University of Pretoria’ and ‘TUT Students’.

Campus noticeboards

Students regularly advertise their books on campus noticeboards for free. Simply ensure that put up your advertisement on a Monday after the boards have been cleared, otherwise your ad may not be seen by enough students.

Other websites

Websites that allow you to advertise a variety of products or enquiries for free include gumtree.co.za, olx.co.za and egafrikaans.co.za
