Controversial self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife were arrested at a lavish hotel in Rustenburg, North West on Friday morning.
The prophet (35) and his wife (37) were arrested by the directorate for priority crime investigation (Hawks).
“The case against the pair concerns alleged offences of fraud, money laundering and contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act,” Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.
He said the crimes were committed from 2015 onwards.
“[The crimes were] in relation to exchange control regulations related to foreign currency in an amount of US$1 147 200,” Mulaudzi explained.
It is understood the couple ran several business enterprises in the country and overseas.
The husband and wife duo are due to appear in the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court on Monday.
Bushiri recently made headlines after three people were trampled to death when a stampede broke out at the Enlightened Christian Gathering Church on 28 December 2018.
The church was subsequently charged with defeating the ends of justice.
