UPDATE: No sign of end to Valhalla sinkhole woes

“While authorities pass the buck, the heavy rainfall is only making matters worse.”

Valhalla residents still have to cope with a sinkhole in the area, about a year after it was formed.

The sinkhole on Stephanus Schoeman Road towards the R55 formed on the national route in March last year because of heavy rainfall.

It gained infamy shortly after a motorist accidentally drove his vehicle into it.

A local told Rekord this week that it seemed nothing was being done to rectify the situation.

“A fence was recently put up next to the road to help restrict access to the road,” said Shereen Tayob.

“What this says to us as residents is there is money for a fence, but not to fix the road.

“And while authorities pass the buck, the recent heavy rainfall is only making things worse. What happens if we get yet another sinkhole in the area?”

Tayob previously highlighted the frustration she and others were experiencing.

“This situation continues to cost me business,” she said.

“I work from home and customers do not want to visit my business anymore because of the nuisance the sinkhole creates. When I go to them I have to take a detour, which adds an extra 30 minutes to my trip.

“It is starting to feel like my time isn’t worth anything to those who have the power to fix the road.”

Tayob believes nothing will be done about the hole until one or two ministers visit the site.

“What must we do to make them understand what we are struggling with?”

The Gauteng roads and transport department did not provide comment by the time of going to press.
