Wally Hayward Marathon to affect Centurion roads
The race commemorates Wally Hayward's exceptional running career which spanned six decades.
The annual Wally Hayward marathon will take place in Centurion on Wednesday morning.
The marathon includes a 42.2km, 21.1km, 10km, 4.9km and 1km “kiddies dash”.
The 42.2km event will kick off at 06:30.
Several roads in Centurion will be affected by the event.
The marathon will start at the Centurion rugby club and West Avenue between South Street and Lenchen Avenue will be closed between 03:30 and 12:00.
The intersection of West and Lenchen avenues will also be closed in both directions from 3:30 to 12:00.
Other roads which might be affected include Jean Avenue, Clifton Avenue, River Road, Kruger Avenue, Molteno Road, Hans Strijdom Avenue, Van Riebeeck Avenue, De La Rey Road, Trichardt Road, Ashwood Drive, Aberdeen Street, Edinburgh Avenue, Cornell Road, Von Willigh Avenue, End Street, John Vorster Drive, Embankment Road and Hendrik Verwoerd Drive.
The race commemorates Wally Hayward’s exceptional running career which spanned six decades.
Representing South Africa at the Olympic Games, Hayward is best remembered for his remarkable achievements in the Comrades Marathon.
Hayward won the event five times.
He even completed Comrades Marathon in 1988 just before his 80th birthday.
Wally stunned the world by finishing in a time of 9:44:15 – beating more than half the field.
He returned a year later to complete the marathon again at age 81.
Hayward died on 28 April 2006 at the age of 97 just a few days before that year’s Wally Hayward Marathon.
