To the relief of locals, the Tshwane metro cleaned up a dirty stream in Pretoria West last week.
Local crime activist Eric Cordier said municipal workers cleaned up the Zeiler Street canal on Thursday.
“Thank you to the Tshwane metro who helped us to clean this stream,” he said.

Cordier said the metro used machinery to get rid of “the masses of litter”.
“I hope residents of the area will now help maintain the canal. People need to be responsible,” he said.
“It is our suburb and we should be proud of it.”

The Zeiler Street canal has, in the past, been the site of illegal dumping.
Cordier said last week the situation at the canal was getting worse each day.

He told Rekord the illegal dumping posed health threats to residents and schoolchildren.
Cordier said criminals have now even started to steal the steel railings which border the canal.
