Pta bribe victims asked to come forward
Ward councillor Shaun Wilkinson said he had received reports about TMPD officers soliciting bribes from motorists near the Pretoria country club, on the R21, near Johan Rissik drive on Fort Klapperkop, Solomon Mahlangu and near the fresh produce market when going to Soshanguve.
The municipality has called on motorists who have been asked for bribes by metro police officers to please come forward.
“Help us get rid of these corrupt officials,” said Tshwane community safety MMC Karen Meyer.
This after various posts surfaced on social media of TMPD officers soliciting bribes, harassing and assaulting motorists in various parts of the city.

“Every time you are halted by a metro cop, memorise the number on the side of the car – not the licence plate only. That number will be used to track which officers were using it.”
“If the officer does not have a badge, report that too.”
“We must stop this cycle of corruption and we can only act if victims come forward.”
“After all, we have a unit which investigates these complaints.”
Meyer said she knew of bribe victims who were too afraid to come forward.
“We had a situation where someone posted their ordeal online. We reached out to them, but they were too afraid.”
She urged the public to also save the 107 emergency number.

A concerned motorist, who did not want to named, said he has also seen corrupt TMPD officers operate near the unfinished Villa Mall.
“They operate near De Villebois and Delmas, Garsfontein and Moreleta Park.”

“Most people won’t come forward because they have paid them the bribe. After all, the officers know their addresses and car registrations. They fear for their lives and would not risk reporting these guys.”
Meyer had said the mayoral committee had approved a new strategic framework to change every aspect of the Tshwane metro police operations.
She said this would help when a bribery complaint is received.
“We will know who the officers are, where they are, who else was involved, and be able to confirm that they were where you said they were when they asked for a bribe”.
