Speedy reaction by the Pretoria North police saw the successful arrest of four suspects early on Friday morning.
Residents at a block of flats in Ben Viljoen Street had a rude awaking at 02:00 when four suspects entered the building’s premises in an attempt to steal cables from the flat’s substation.
“They broke the fence with a car jack and burnt open the locks to the gates and substation,” Annalie Barnard, the landlady of the block of flats, told Rekord after the suspects were apprehended and arrested.

Barnard said she woke up in the early hours of the morning when one of the tenants’ son called her to inform her the fence on the side of the flats was broken open.
“We have been noticing unwanted characters hanging around the park opposite our flats the past few weeks,” said Barnard.
Flat residents then searched the premises when they noticed the gate to the flat’s substation was also broken open and heard a noise.
Barnard then notified the Pretoria North police at 02:15.
Within minutes two police officers arrived at the flats.
Police quickly reacted and arrested two suspects on the premises.

Another two suspects, who were hiding at the substation, were also caught at 04:00 when they tried to flee the property.
“Those two policemen who responded to our complaint were excellent. They were so professional, friendly and calm. We salute the good service by the Pretoria North police station,” Barnard said.
Spokesperson Captain Matthews Nkoadi confirmed four suspects have been arrested for housebreaking.
“Our proper engagement with the community and the information provided led to the successful arrest of the suspects,” said Nkoadi.
“Thank you to the community for your cooperation.”
