Police have warned Centurion residents, especially school children, to be cautious following an increase in so-called “car jump” robberies in the area.
“Criminals would use their cars to block pedestrians’ way and then get out to rob them,” said Lyttelton police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.
“The robbers would then jump back into their vehicle and speed away.”

Lyttelton police have called on residents to be vigilant when walking next to the road.
Criminals were targeting cellphones, laptops and handbags in particular.
Miller said in some instances school children were also being targeted.
“Children who often walk home with earphones on should use only one earphone at a time,” he said.
“If you have both earphones in your ears you will not be able to hear what goes on around you.”
Police advised pedestrians to keep their valuables out of sight at all times.

“If you do fall victim to these criminals try to remain as calm as possible,” Miller said.
“Always try to get a good description of the suspect.
“Getting a description of the type of vehicle used as well as its registration can also help police in tracking down the culprits.”
