The police have yet to rearrest the 39 undocumented immigrants who escaped from a police vehicle at the Wierdabrug police station last week.
The immigrants had appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court earlier on Thursday, 13 June.
The group was being transported from court to the station when they escaped, according to police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.
On Friday Dlamini confirmed the escapees had yet to be apprehended.
This despite assurances by the police that the immigrants would, in all likelihood, be apprehended again during upcoming crime prevention operations.
“I can confirm the suspects remain at large and the search for them continues,” Dlamini said.
“The internal investigation has yet to be concluded.”
This investigation would look into whether police negligence had led to the escape.
Gauteng DA community safety spokesperson Michael Shackleton said he could not see how the police would be able to identify escapees as they were undocumented.
Shackleton had previously called on the police to speed up the internal investigation.
“The police officers are not adequately trained and have no resources to deal with such situations,” he said.
Anyone with information that may assist the police in apprehending the escapees is urged to contact the Wierdabrug police station on 012-6850015.
