A Botswana national was arrested on Sunday, after he was caught driving a suspected hijacked bakkie in Laudium.
Tshwane metro police officers received information about a Ford Ranger that was hijacked in Ga-Rankuwa on Saturday.
“The information was followed up on and the Ford Ranger was located in Laudium the next day. Further surveillance was done on the premises where the vehicle was found and the officers noticed that false registration plates were affixed to the vehicle,” said Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba.

He said while the officers were busy with more surveillance, the driver changed the registration plates.
“The suspect then got back into the car and drove off. The officers managed to stop and arrested him for possession of a hijacked vehicle.”

Mahamba said R35 700 in cash, two cell phones and multiple SIM cards were recovered inside the bakkie.
“The suspect was well known to the officers. He is a Botswana national who was arrested before by the K9-unit for the possession of stolen vehicles ranging from SUVs to pick-ups,” he said.
Tshwane MMC for community safety alderman Karen Meyer welcomed the arrest and commended the team for their hard work and dedication.
“We also appreciate the relationship that exist between TMPD and other stakeholders involved in combating crime,” she said.
