The Tshwane metro has yet to confirm if it ordered recyclers at the informal waste-sorting station in Clubview to cease operations.
An official document in Rekord’s possession gave the recyclers seven days to stop their “illegal” sorting activities on the corner of Lyttelton Road and the N14.
The document was reportedly handed to the “Bagarezi” waste sorters on 10 June, which also compelled them to remove all their waste with them.
The document states the recyclers are in contravention of national environmental management and health acts.

But those at the station continue to operate, despite “an axe hanging over their heads”, according to Bagarezi representative Stefan van der Westhuizen.
“The problem with suddenly uprooting them is that no matter where they go, there are already waste pickers in that area.
“This might lead to increased in-fighting.”
Earlier this year the Department of Environmental Affairs estimated informal recyclers are saving South Africa’s municipalities up to R750-million in landfill space each year.
The metro had yet to comment on the matter.
