Toy gun used in foiled north robbery

Blue Monday for three robbers who got arrested with a toy gun in a foiled robbery at Kolennade shopping centre.

Three suspects were arrested on suspicion of robbing a clothing shop at the Kolonnade shopping centre Pretoria North with a toy gun at 09:00 this morning.

“The CCTV footage shows two of the suspects roaming around the Legit clothing shop this morning. The suspects then entered the shop and pointed at the staff members with a firearm,” Constable Edward Mmbi from the Sinoville police station told Rekord

“The suspects then pushed the staff around and demanded money. After the suspects managed to get the money, they left the shop. One of the staff members used another exit door of the shop and managed to alert a security guard of what had happened,” Mmbi said.

Leon Muller, Fidelity ADT district manager for Pretoria, confirmed that security guards from Fidelity reacted to the robbery.

“Officer Patrick Sebesho of the SRU (special response unit) team immediately responded and found the suspects attempting to flee the scene in a metallic green BMW. He managed to corner the suspects and stop the vehicle.

“One of the suspects in the back of the car raised his firearm and Officer Sebesho fired two warning rounds at the suspects’ vehicle. The driver immediately surrendered while his cohorts dropped their weapons and fled the scene,” said Muller.

“Officer Sebesho was able to apprehend the driver, while the security officers and another supporting security company were able to apprehend the remaining two suspects at a nearby petrol station.

“No injuries were sustained during the arrest, and firearms and cash were recovered at the scene. All three suspects were handed over to the Sinoville police.”

Kolonnade management issued a press release regarding the incident.

“Security were notified immediately, and their fast action resulted in the suspects being apprehended. The stolen money and a firearm were recovered, and no one was injured throughout the incident,” said Monique Jansen van Rensburg, marketing manager for the shopping centre.

Mmbi confirmed all threes suspect were arrested.

“Two of the suspects fled the vehicle on foot, while the driver remained in the vehicle. Both the suspects on foot were arrested 500m from the mall in Sefako Makgatho Drive, while the driver of the vehicle was arrested on the scene. The money has been recovered and is currently being counted.”
